A community’s town crier has received widespread praise for his unstinting marathon efforts delivering uplifting messages of joy and hope during the four-day Queen’s Jubilee celebrations.

In all, Marcus Emms attended 72 events in his full dress livery as official Town Crier for Shaw and Crompton Council and issued 105 ‘criers’ including some pre-recorded for birthday and anniversary celebrations.

Marcus, a joiner who lives at High Crompton, has been town crier for four years and in addition, spends Christmas as Santa Claus in support of local charities and  good causes. He visited Royton at the request of local councillors.

A community post on social media praised him saying: "Marcus tirelessly devotes his time to others and really has enriched our community spirit spreading joy wherever he goes.

"He's massively supported by his family along with the Parish Council, the Events Committee and Councillors. I'm sure you'll agree everyone involved in the Beacon lighting and all local events he has made us very proud of where we live."

Tired and footsore after his marathon, Marcus, who attended the events with his wife, Michaela, responded saying: "There have been so many happy faces everywhere. I’m proud to represent you as your Town Crier.

"Thank you everyone who asked us to come along to their events, had their photographs taken and to everyone who organised street parties and events - well done.

"Everyone has been so welcoming, and we have tried to showcase the beautiful town of Shaw and Crompton at what it does best: we laugh together, have fun together, we cry together when tragedy strikes our town, but, above all else, we come together.

"The Jubilee shows we celebrate together as well," he declared, “and thanks to my children, events have been added to our busy schedule last minute.

“I’m proud we haven't missed anyone who asked us to attend their event and finally my wonderful wife: none of this would have been possible without your help and your filming and photography.

“Once again thank you to all who live in the best little town in England.”
