‘Drug dealing hotspot’ flat shut as neighbours speak of months-long ordeal

A flat said by council bosses to be a ‘drug-dealing hotspot’ has been cleared after a closure order was enforced.

Neighbours said they’d seen dealing outside 2 Talbot Close in Waterhead at ‘all hours of the day and night’, Oldham town hall said in a statement.

Warning were issued, it added, but ‘the criminal and anti-social activities continued’.

The council, with evidence from housing association First Choice Homes Oldham (FCHO) and Greater Manchester Police, have now secured a closure order after taking the matter to magistrates in Tameside.

It prevents anyone from going inside for three months. Anyone who breaches the order can be arrested – and could be hit with an unlimited fine and/or up to six months behind bards.

The Local Reporting Democracy Service spoke to neighbours after news of the order was made public.

Wayne Clegg said: “I’ve lived in this flat for 18 years.

"There’s never been something like this before. I felt insecure in my own flat.”

“It really stressed me out,” another man said, while a neighbour added: “This is the best Christmas present I could have.”

Councillor Peter Dean, cabinet member for ‘thriving communities and culture’, said: “Oldham council and our partners will not allow Waterhead residents to have their lives ruined by the irresponsible and criminal behaviour of a small minority.

“I’m sure the action we’ve taken will be welcomed by the community and I would like to thank everyone who has played a part in bringing this issue to a successful end.

“If you witness similar behaviour report it to Greater Manchester Police and the council’s Community Safety Service and we’ll take the appropriate action against the offenders.

"If you live in social housing, you can also contact your provider.”

FCHO head of neighbourhood management Peter Davidson said: “We are very grateful for the support of Oldham Council and Greater Manchester Police in securing this Closure Order in Talbot Close.

“It is a good example of agencies working together to help a community by acting against those who commit crime and anti-social behaviour, and we will be taking further action for breach of tenancy.

“I know this firm action has been welcomed in the community and FCHO will not hesitate in supporting such an order again if similar circumstances arise in one of its properties.

“We take our duties to help, support and safeguard our customers from anti-social behaviour very seriously.”
