Stuart reigns supreme at stamford

GOLF: STUART Fletcher had two good reasons to celebrate at Stamford Golf Club after clinching the Vice President’s Prize and Morris Medal.

Played on the same day, the former is for the best 36-hole nett score and the latter is awarded to the golfer with the leading gross total over the same 36 holes.

Conditions were good for a long day’s golf. Fletcher recorded 79-7-72 in the morning, and 71-7-64 in the afternoon for a combined 136 nett and 150 gross.

The Morris Medal is the Club Championship — the most prestigious competition on offer at Stamford.

Fletcher was first out and had to wait until the field came in before he could rest easy.

He said: “I have to thank my playing partners, who knew I was on for a great score. They kept me grounded and also spurred me on. The 71 is my best competitive round and even a bogey on the last didn’t spoil it.

“I was delighted to win the Vice President’s nett prize, but to also win the Morris Medal with best combined gross and become club champion has made my season.”
