Released by the Department for Education, Progress 8 scores reflect the progress students make during their time at secondary school
Staff and students at E-ACT The Oldham Academy North (TOAN) are celebrating after achieving the best Progress 8 scores among non-selective schools in Oldham.
Released this month by the Department for Education, Progress 8 scores reflect the progress students make during their time at secondary school.
These scores compare a student’s expected results, based on their performance at the start of secondary education, with their actual GCSE outcomes in Year 11 across eight key subjects.
This year, TOAN’s Progress 8 score is an impressive 0.37, compared to the local authority average of 0.04.
This means TOAN students are significantly outperforming expectations compared to similar students in other schools.
Additionally, 47.8% of TOAN students achieved GCSE grades of Level 5 or above in Maths and English, surpassing the local average of 40% and the national average of 45.9%.
The success also extends to disadvantaged students, with Progress 8 scores for students on free school meals showing no performance gap compared to their peers; bucking both local and national trends.
Jessica Giraud, Headteacher at E-ACT The Oldham Academy North, said: “The whole school is immensely proud of these latest results, which clearly demonstrate the hard work and efforts of our fantastic students, together with the talent and commitment of our teaching staff.
"We are particularly proud that our exemplary education ensures that even if a student is classed as disadvantaged they can flourish at TOAN.
"Progress 8 scores indicate the journey travelled throughout secondary education, and our students have journeyed brilliantly throughout that time.”
Mrs Giraud also highlighted the exciting prospects for TOAN students, adding: “They achieve at every stage and are going on to great things.
"For example, we were delighted to learn about the university destinations of our former students earlier this term, with places secured at the University of Manchester to study Law, the University of Durham to study Physics, and the University of Nottingham to study Mechanical Engineering, among others.
“We have high aspirations for our students, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see them meeting those aspirations and succeeding.”
