Hollinwood blockbuster

THE crusade to give the hills of Hollinwood a touch of LA glamour has gathered pace.
Local hero Frank Rothwell, responsible for the 8ft-high letters put up and then pulled down on the M60 embankment, has submitted a planning application, which he has paid for himself, to reinstate the sign.
Motorists were delighted by Oldham’s version of the famous Hollywood sign but the Highways Agency immediately removed it claiming it was too much of a distraction.
Mr Rothwell (pictured), who owns Manchester Cabins, is determined to bring the letters back to give Oldhamers a much needed boost and attract business to the area.
He came up with the idea after learning that Manchester had been twinned with LA and thought it appropriate that Oldham shared some of the spotlight. Oldhamers soon got behind the campaign and Facebook group “Bring Back the Hollinwood Sign” soon attracted hundreds of supporters.
In his application, Mr Rothwell says that the proposed spot — 65ft up the southbound carriageway — is a prominent position and ideal for the sign.
He also says that the sign would help to give Hollinwood back its identity after the M60 extension cut it into two parts.
Mr Rothwell, who doesn’t think the sign will distract motorists, believes the letters would add interest to the M60 along with other recognisable features such as the Trafford Centre and the pyramid in Stockport.
The proposed structure would be made out of steel plate, built on secure foundations and kept well away from traffic.
The Chronicle is running a campaign for readers to suggest alternative locations for the sign after Mr Rothwell said he would be willing to put it up elsewhere in the district. Keep your ideas coming in (no later than first-post on Monday).
