Pupils prepare for Oldham’s big day

YOUNGSTERS in Hathershaw are gearing up for a spectacular Olympics celebration.

Pupils at Hathershaw School, Lyndhurst School, Holy Rosary RC Primary, St Martin’s Primary, Broadfield Primary and Greenhill Primary have been busy getting into the spirit of the games.

They have been learning all about the Olympics and the history of the torch as well as making posters and banners.

Their artwork will line town centre streets on Sunday when the torch passes through Oldham.

And there will be a celebration event outside Hathershaw School on the day.

A section of the street will be cordoned off and there will be dancing displays, gymnastics and live music.

Lorna Phillips, assistant principal at Hathershaw, said: “The excitement and the knowledge the children have for the Olympics is truly heartwarming. Olympic fever has really gripped the kids and they know all about the torch, it’s symbolic value and why it is lit.”

An official torch that has already passed through other parts of the country was brought to the schools so the children could see it for themselves.
