£4m primary’s official opening is respite from the gloom

PROUD pupils welcomed the mayor and other VIP guests to their super new school at the official opening yesterday.

Royton Hall Primary, School has replaced the amalgamated High Barn and Byron Street schools.

Pupils have been using the state-of-the-art school, built with over £4m of New Deals for School funding, since September and yesterday dignitaries helped officially open the building.

Pupils and teachers joined former staff, governors and guests in a special assembly, before enjoying a picnic and taking part in fun activities such as street dancing and circus skills.

The Mayor of Oldham councillor David Jones, Nick Brown, retiring principal of Oldham Sixth Form College, and chairman of the governors Roy Butterworth, marked the occasion by unveiling a plaque.

Jane Wilson, head teacher, said: “It is a fantastic building and we are very lucky to be in such a modern facility.

“It proves to us how privileged we are in the light of what has happened this week.”

Nick Brown said: “It is a great honour to be asked to be here.

“It says something about Oldham’s future when we have a new primary school like this and the first national science centre coming together in a few weeks.

“Despite all the difficulties nationally, we still do it. If we are prepared to find a local solution and unlock the talent in the town, like we are doing, then the future looks bright.”

Councillor Jones said: “Each time we build a primary school, they are better in terms of providing a good learning environment for the children. I’m delighted to be here, it means the children have a start that they wouldn’t have had in the old buildings.”
