Latics League Cup run ended by Morecambe

Oldham Athletic’s dream of a long run the EFL Cup has come to a shuddering halt after being knocked out of the competition at Morecambe.

It means Latics have also missed out on the chance to test themselves against Premier League opposition in the next round.

Newcastle United awaited the winners of the tie at Mazuma Stadium with Morecambe starting off the contest brightly and had a confident penalty appeal waved away by the referee before Aaron Wildig had chipped in the opener.

Wildig latched onto Liam McAlinden’s pass to give the hosts the lead.

It was a lead they looked to add to but Oldham had the frame of their goal to thank as Ryan Conney’s 30-yard strike crashed against the crossbar and rebounded away to safety.

Harry Kewell’s men did rally in the latter stages of the match but they couldn’t find a way past Morecambe’s defence despite Adam Phillips almost scoring an own goal and Carl Piergianni heading wide.

Oldham Athletic head back to the league next where they will be looking for their first point and goal of the new campaign when they travel to Lamex Stadium and face Stevenage.
