A shocked school community has launched an appeal to support the family of a “much loved” teacher after an incident in Chadderton last Wednesday.

Paul Bowles, who was 50, died after officers responded to reports of a fight on Broadway, Chadderton, close to the Elk Mill roundabout.

Now, on behalf of St Anne's CofE Primary School in Lydgate, a fund raiser aimed at raising £1,000 to support the family, has been launched.

The JustGiving fundraiser front page reads: “Our school community is devastated by the tragic loss of a wonderful, kind and funny teacher.

"We would like to show our support to Mr Bowles' family at this very difficult time.”

The PTA originally aimed at £1,000, but it’s really taken off - almost £6,000 has now been pledged.

On the fundraising page, one tribute said: “A lovely man, our school community is devastated 😢 such a kind and patient teacher, the kids adored him.

"Thoughts are with his family and friends.”

Another said :”The victim is Mr Paul Bowles - an amazing teacher at St Anne’s Lydgate.

"The whole community is in shock. RIP Mr Bowles.

"Thank you for everything you did for the children and the school."

Police officers investigating the incident can be contacted via 101 or via GMP's Live Chat service at: gmp.police.uk, quoting log 2812 of 26/03/25.
