Scholes demands investment in Boundary Park pitch

The former Manchester United midfielder wasn’t happy with what he saw his squad playing on during their 1-1 draw at home to Crewe Alexandra on Saturday and has urged the club to spend money on the surface in the summer.

The 44-year old claims the players won’t be able to play the attacking style of football he wants from them if they’re forced to continue to face opponents on the increasingly bare pitch.

Speaking ahead of the visit of Morecambe on Tuesday night (19th February) Scholes said: “We need to spend some money on it if we want to play entertaining attacking style of football which, looking at the last few games has been difficult and will be difficult in this league but if we wana even try and do that we need to sort the pitch out.”

Latics have been hampered with a poor surface for the last few seasons with sections of it being roped off during warm-ups before games.

It’s thought the conditions at the Football League’s highest ground play a part in killing off the grass as the season goes on with a new pitch expected to be laid in the summer.

However that could come too late for Oldham Athletic if they are to continue their push for a place in the League Two playoffs and try and seal a quick return to League One following their relegation at the end of last season.
