Heartbreak for Oldham Athletic as Crewe grab point

After beginning his time at the helm of the club with a 4-1 thumping of Yeovil Town in midweek, Scholes was given a lesson in how cruel League Two football can be.

Latics took a deserved lead after 23 minutes when goalkeeper Daniel Iversen cleared his lines early, smashing the ball into the path of Callum Lang.

He raced clear of the Crewe defence and slotted it past Ben Garratt from the edge of the box.

That was to be the last of the good news from Scholes, who might’ve not seen what was to come when his side went in with the 1-0 lead at halftime.

After the break the visitors came more and more into the game as the half wore on with many of the 5,288 in Boundary Park concerned that an equaliser was on the cards.

However, they had to wait until the third minute of stoppage time before Tom Lowery crossed to Oldham’s far post where George Ray was waiting to bundle to the ball home, breaking Latics’ hearts in the process.

The draw moved Oldham Athletic up to 10th in League Two table, leaving them six points adrift of the playoff places with a game in hand on those above them.

Latics are next in action on Tuesday night (19th February) when they host Morecambe.
