Oldham Stroke Support Group calls out for new members

Date published: 09 January 2019

An Oldham stroke group is encouraging new members to join them, as they move to a new venue to help local stroke survivors on the road to recovery.

Oldham Stroke Support Group was created in partnership with the Stroke Association, and is run by volunteers to help people in the area rebuild their lives after stroke.

The group will now meet each Wednesday from 10am-12pm, at Dovetales Christian Centre on Beal Lane in Shaw.

Patricia Bamford runs the group. She said: “It’s vital that stroke survivors have support throughout their recovery, and the group is a lifeline for many people in the Oldham community.

"We currently have around 15 members who enjoy chatting to other people in a similar situation; it’s so important for stroke survivors to share their stories and experience with each other.

"Our members also enjoy quizzes and activities, while going forward we’re keen to introduce speakers and chair based exercises on a monthly basis.

“Our group welcomes anyone who has had a stroke, along with their partner or carer if they wish.

"We’re always looking for new members to join in, and anyone interested in getting involved is welcome to get in touch.”

Laura Coleman, Volunteering and Community Officer at the Stroke Association, said: “Our group members are all different ages and from different backgrounds, but they have one thing in common – they’re stroke survivors.

"The condition can be absolutely devastating, but with the right help and support, people can make fantastic recoveries, and that’s what this group is all about.

"We’d love to see more stroke survivors and carers from the area come along and join us at our group as they celebrate a new venue and weekly meetings.”
