Charting Barrie's journey through the ups and downs of shoulder replacement surgery

Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust has spent the past year charting the journey of one of their patients, Grotton-based rugby league legend, Barrie McDermott.

Following a 16-year rugby career with Oldham, Wigan Warriors, Leeds Rhinos and Widnes Viking, the 46-year-old decided the time had come to undergo a full shoulder replacement under the care of Wrightington Orthopaedic Consultant, Mr Puneet Monga.

From admission to discharge, Barrie has worked with the Trust to highlight the ups and downs of recovery, the importance of physiotherapy and aimed to answer any questions people may have from his own personal experiences.

And now, all the videos will be shared to help future patients be fully informed about what they can expect should they undergo a similar operation.

Barrie said: “Wrightington have been top class, particularly the physio department who have been really good with me.

“After the first six weeks I was really happy with where I was  and I think that came from how much information I had before, and then immediately after, the operation.

“I can’t speak highly enough about Wrightington, the people, and the processes that they follow, and the manner they use to deliver the services.”

Mr Monga, who performed Barrie’s surgery said: “It has been a pleasure and privilege to look after Barrie.

“I am glad that he has had a pleasant experience, thanks to the fantastic multi-disciplinary team at Wrightington.

“Management of arthritis in young and active individuals presents unique challenges including surgical technique, implant survivorship and managing expectations.

“A joint replacement is only carried out for end stage arthritis when all other options such as physiotherapy and painkillers have stopped working.”

Mr Monga added: “I am confident that by sharing his journey in this manner, Barrie will help many prospective patients who wish to consider such an option for their shoulder problems.”
