Double the number of apprentices will be working at First Choice Homes Oldham (FCHO) by 2027 after the housing association announced the expansion during National Apprenticeship Week.
There are presently 11 apprentices at FCHO, with more due next year, and then 22 in two years’ time, the new chief executive Mark Gifford has pledged.
Among the present crop is 17-year-old Angelise Johnston, who is an apprentice joiner in the voids team that repairs properties once tenants move out.
“Doing a two-year apprenticeship in joinery while working is a great experience," said Angelise, who is from Dobcross.
“I have lots of ideas and get to apply what I learn at Oldham College immediately, so I’m constantly using my learning to upskill.”
She explained she became interested in joinery after completing a GCSE in construction at school.
Angelise added: “I knew it would open lots of doors for me.
"My dad - who did a lot of woodwork - has always been really encouraging and wanted me to learn new skills that would help me in the future.”
She added: “Being a woman in this industry doesn’t faze me.
"I am learning skills and gaining experience in something I enjoy and am good at, and that’s what’s important to me.
“If you're a woman and if you feel like you want to do a trade, just go for it - there's nothing that'll stop you.”
Mr Gifford said it was vitally important FCHO can offer both young people and older workers the opportunity to learn new skills through apprenticeships to help the business and upskill the local workforce.
“We have one apprentice who is in their 40s and all of them are spread across our business in departments like business administration and in electrical so there is a broad range of opportunity we are incredibly proud of,” he said.
“But, as an anchor organisation here in Oldham we must expand the opportunity and I am delighted to announce during National Apprenticeship Week we will double the number of apprentices over the next two years and strengthen our relationship with Oldham College in the process.”
He added: “One of the biggest advantages of apprenticeships is that they bridge the gap between job seekers’ skills and industry requirements.
"For us, apprenticeships are a fantastic way to build a strong talent pipeline, encourage personal and professional growth, and equip people with real work skills that will benefit them for years to come.”
