Ethan Shaw, a dedicated Year 7 student at Hathershaw College, has undertaken a remarkable fundraising challenge for Motor Neurone Disease (MND).
Currently playing as a second-row prop for Oldham Rugby Union, Higginshaw Rugby League Club and Oldham Town Rugby League Youth Team, Ethan's commitment is evident in his rigorous training schedule, which includes three training sessions each week, along with a match every weekend.
In addition to this, he has maintained a consistent running routine in order to fulfil his fundraising goal.
Inspired by the exemplary contributions of rugby legends Rob Burrow and Kevin Sinfield, Ethan has decided to embark on a sponsored challenge to run a total of 31 miles throughout January.
He said: “I love rugby and I’m a huge fan of Rob Burrow and Kevin Sinfield, who were both extraordinary rugby players.
"Since Rob passed away recently, I was inspired by Kevin's efforts to support him during his illness and the fundraising he has undertaken to raise both money and awareness for MND.”
Ethan's empathy and motivation are rooted in his respect for these athletes and their legacies.
Initially setting a modest fundraising goal of £150, Ethan has impressively surpassed expectations by raising over £600, with just ten miles remaining to complete his challenge.
He added: “It means everything because they are my favourite players, and I feel proud to get out there and help others, making their lives better.”
This personal connection to the cause fuels Ethan’s determination to contribute meaningfully.
Mark Giles, Principal of Hathershaw College, praised Ethan for his initiative.
Mr Giles said: “We are so proud of Ethan.
"He is a really good lad who always thinks about others.
"His commitment to rugby and his willingness to use his athletic abilities to raise money for such a worthwhile cause is commendable.
"Kevin Sinfield is a member of The Pinnacle Learning Trust, of which Hathershaw is a part, and I know he would thoroughly approve of what Ethan is doing as part of the Pinnacle family.”
Looking forward, Ethan aims to continue his running and fundraising efforts, expressing a desire to explore additional charitable opportunities.
He added: “I might do some more for MND, but I am also considering supporting other causes, such as cancer charities, to help as many people as possible.”
Through his dedication and hard work, Ethan serves as an inspiring example for his peers.
