A good cause with roots near the River Nile is offering a pool of top-notch tutors to folks in Oldham.
Online service YouLearnt is aiming to make searching for educators less of a chore by providing quality rated teachers in everything from learning English to passing exams in Maths - at the click of a button.
And with figures showing children in Oldham’s phonics and skills remain below pre-COVID levels, it is good to know that the social enterprise puts doing good on a par with making money.
Which is why they are based in the heart of Oldham, in Upturn’s new Hive hub.
“I am so pleased that YouLearnt has become our first permanent resident in the Hive, because their social enterprise is exactly what it is built for,” explained Anwar Ali OBE, co-creator of Upturn.
“If we are to make our economy thrive again, then we must improve our skills set and qualifications.
"Yaser and his team have just made that affordable and accessible for people in the borough.”
Founder of YouLearnt Yaser Selim jokes that his new business is the “Trip Advisor for tutors.”
Essentially, users can log on, find who they need, take their lessons, and then rate their teacher.
The higher that score, the further up the tutor appears on the list.
With worldwide contacts and teachers vying for business, Yaser claims he can find a tutor to teach practically anything, anywhere!
He said: “Anyone who has tried to find a good tutor to help them pass their GCSEs will know how hard it is to locate one.
"Our service removes all the hassle from that process.
"We have all bases covered, too.
"If someone wants to learn Science in Spanish, we’ll find them a tutor."
The Hive offers good concerns low rent office space, free amenities and puts them in touch with a thriving Hive business network, together with expert mentoring and a plethora of events and training opportunities.
It was recently visited by Jonathan Reynolds MP, Secretary of State for Business, who hailed it as a sound solution to Britain’s town centre decline.
Yaser (40) has made Oldham his home for the last five years and believes that for him, moving to the Hive was essential.
“It gives the business an address and when people are looking for professionals to teach their family, that is important,” he said.
The father-of-three has apparently enjoyed the quiet of being Upturn’s first resident (!) but is looking forward to it becoming a hive of activity, shortly.
Anwar Ali concluded: “Every day new customers are situating themselves in our Spindles base, and Yaser will enjoy the company of organisations helping our community to do things like reduce anti-social behaviour.
"I know of no place like it or any business as innovative in their area as Yaser’s.
"Yes, we wish him every success in being an entrepreneur but also recognise the contribution he is making to raising educational attainment in Oldham.”
