Westwood Academy highly commended in latest 'Good' inspection

Date published: 20 April 2023

Families and staff from Westwood Academy have been celebrating the latest report which described the Harmony Trust academy as “a calm and respectful school where pupils thrive”.

The report went on to praise the school’s “focus on developing pupils’ personal development” along with the expertise of teaching staff who “use their strong subject knowledge to deliver the curriculum effectively”.

The report highlights the high-quality support in place for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), and the high expectations for attainment and behaviour for all pupils.

The inspector noted: “There is enough evidence...to suggest that the school could be judged outstanding if we were to carry out a graded...inspection now.”

Sarah Wimperis, Westwood Academy Principal, said: “We were delighted to share this report with our Westwood community.

"We understand the importance of home life to children’s success in school.

"We work hard to ensure our families feel invested and involved in school and were very pleased the inspector saw the ‘extremely high regard’ parents and carers have for the academy.

"We are very grateful to the Westwood community for helping to make the school as successful as it is.”

Harmony Trust CEO Antony Hughes added: “Westwood Academy is a wonderful school that many parents described as ‘amazing’ to the inspector.

"Our team at Westwood and Harmony are deeply committed to creating a nurturing and inclusive environment for pupils and their families.

"We were particularly pleased to see Westwood pupils’ ‘delight in reading’ highlighted in the report.

"This reflects the impact of the Harmony Trust’s ‘Read, Achieve, Succeed’ strategy, which recognises attainment in reading as one of the key indicators of success in all curriculum areas.”

The March inspection was an ‘ungraded’ inspection under Section 8 of the Education Act (2005).

These visits check the school remains ‘good’ following its previous, full inspection.

Westwood Academy’s next inspection will be a ‘graded’ inspection under Section 5 of the Education Act (2005).
