The world-famous Band of the Grenadier Guards have thrilled audiences in the Saddleworth area this week.

Garrath Beckwith, the Curriculum Leader of Music at Saddleworth School, who organised the event, said: ”The poorly-timed Pennine weather interrupted plans for a parade exclusively for the students at school.

“However, some quick thinking from the band saw the world-class outfit perform an indoor marching display that wowed the entire year 7, year 8 and year 9 cohort of students.

“In all, close to 900 of Saddleworth School's students experienced this magnificent display in their own back yard.

"What an experience for these youngsters.

“Our young musicians have had an absolute blast this week, participating in workshops with the superb trombonist Matt Lewis and performing alongside our very good friends in the Band of the Grenadier Guards - special memories have been created.”

During Thursday evening the elite military musical ensemble entertained at the new Saddleworth School in Diggle.

The 540-strong audience were treated to a first-class programme of music which featured Matt Lewis, Principal Trombone of London's BBC Concert Orchestra, and the Saddleworth School Brass Band.

The grand finale of the evening was a massed band performance of the Saddleworth School anthem 'Hail Smiling Morn' and the instantly recognisable 'British Grenadiers'.

The audience gave rapturous applause, offering a full standing ovation, and left the concert with a spring in their step having enjoyed a wonderful evening of fine music making.

And today (Friday), local and visitors to Saddleworth were treated to an outstanding parade by the Guards who marched into Uppermill - full of glorious autumnal sunshine - and then listened to an incredible display of military virtuosity.

Said Garrath: "There is absolutely nothing like the sound of the Grenadier Guards Band - I was very fortunate to conduct this great musical institution in a massed band performance of 'Hail Smiling Morn' at the concert last night and the experience was absolutely incredible!

“The way the band performed in the Uppermill parade today shows their absolute class and proves why they are the best in the business.

"I hope teveryone who shared this week's performances have had a great time - we have really enjoyed putting these performance opportunities together for the musicians and students at Saddleworth School and the wider Saddleworth community.

“We look forward to welcoming our great friends the glorious Grenadier Guards back to Saddleworth again in the future,” he added.
