Go Green during Saddleworth's Great Big Green Week

Saddleworth Hydro are inviting visitors to join an exciting Great Big Green Week celebrating action on climate change.

The week - from September 18-26 - highlights the need for urgent action on climate and nature ahead of COP26, the United Nations Climate conference, later this year in Glasgow. 

Saddleworth Hydro will celebrate actions already taking place locally as folk begin to consider changes that need to be made.

Join this stimulating diary of events: 

Monday, September 13, 2.30pm: Love Lydgate talk and discussion on Climate Change at Lydgate Parish Hall, Stockport Road.

Saturday, September 18, 10-4pm: Saddleworth Community Hydro Open Day, seeing green energy generated at Dovestone Reservoir in Greenfield.

Visit the turbine house tucked away at the foot of the dam.

Sunday, September 19: Saddleworth Show 10-5pm: Visit the Big Green Week stall for ideas of what others are doing locally and what you might do.

Wednesday September 22 and Friday 24: Join RSPB volunteers working on Sadddleworth Moor sphagnum planting or other activities.

Friday, September 24, 12-4pm: Bee Green In a wild green garden.

An opportunity to chat to Jonathan, bee man extraordinary, who has hives in gardens all around Saddleworth, including our own four hives housing 200,000 bees.

Weather depending, bring a picnic blanket and have a picnic lunch, chat to Jonathan and visit the gallery in the garden. 5 Crib Lane, Dobcross. 

Saturday, September 25, 10am: Uppermill Canal Action Network (UCAN) works with the Canal and River Trust (CRT) to maintain and improve the canal and the surrounding area within the village. 

The volunteers will be cleaning the towpath and clearing vegetation.

There will be the opportunity to visit the woodland site and hear about what UCAN have been doing over the previous few years.

Afterwards, meet for tea and biscuits. All welcome.

Saturday 25th September 25: 10-12noon: Saddleworth Community Garden, Parish Centre, Uppermill OL3 6HQ.

Saddleworth WI “Make a Bug House", using  natural and recycled materials to create a home for insects and learn about the some of the insects and study their habitat.

Everyone welcome.

Visit the Incredible Edibles garden and pick some food for free.

Saturday, September 25: Harvest supper celebrating sustainable and local food.
