Am I seeing double... or treble?

Drivers on a Saddleworth country road are playing a guessing game over the actual speed they are restricted to.

That's because the large white painted speed limits on Wall Hill Road, linking the A62 Huddersfield-Oldham Road, appear to show 20mph, 30mph and, depending the direction you travelling, 80mph.

The signage has created a lively debate and some wry comments on social media.

Said one: “That's as clear as mud.

"20mph? 30mph? 60mph? Very confusing for those who don't know the road.”

One added: “To most drivers in Saddleworth, it doesn’t matter because very few are actually doing 20mph in the 20mph zones.”

One commented: “From 20mph to 30mph both ways seems strange and unwarranted from a road safety view."

And a local whose family lives on Wall Hill Road said: “The council they put down 20mph... next it's changed to 30mph but the speed of cars is getting worse.”

Local resident and 20mph campaigner Jayne Gibson said: “When the Council installed new 20mph speed limits throughout much of Dobcross in March, road speeds (roundels) were painted on the road surface of Delph New Road and Wall Hill Road showing where the speed is 20mph and where it reverts back to 30mph.

“By mistake, the contractors painted 20mph on the top part of Wall Hill Road, where it should have said 30mph, as this top section reverts back to 30mph.

“This was reported to the council who arranged for the contractors to repaint the correct number, but this repaint job has left a confusing symbol and no-one is clear of what the speed should be here.

“Some people think it looks like a 30, some a 60 and some think it’s 80mph.

"Again this has been brought to the Council’s attention and we are glad to hear it’s being repainted with the correct number.”

An Oldham Council spokesperson said: “We have spoken with the team and they should say 30mph.

"They’re going to be tidied up and made clearer.”
