Oldham’s tiniest bar has scored a remarkable double whammy by claiming two top honours from the drinkers' watchdog organisation.
The micro Cob and Coal bar in Tommyfield Market has been voted the CAMRA Rochdale, Oldham and Bury branch Pub of the Year, and the Cider Pub of the Year 2021.
The pub is owned by Michelle and Chris Riley, who, through their new Oldham Pub Company, are aiming to develop exciting new watering holes across the community.
The couple have just opened their second venture, The Fox and Pine, in a conservation area near Oldham Town Hall, which is already being praised by discerning drinkers for its wide range of distinguished drinks.
The awards were presented by CAMRA branch chairman, Peter Alexander, at their first social event since Government restrictions were lifted.
He said: “The Cob and Coal Tap is a relatively new venture and it is to Michelle’s credit it has shot to the top of the affection of not only local CAMRA members, but real ale and cider drinkers in Oldham and far beyond.
“Our members voted overwhelmingly for the Cob and Coal with its fantastic range of well-kept real ales, a stunning array of traditional ciders and the very warm welcome to guests.
“They are putting real ale and cider at the forefront of their offer, and that's not only great for CAMRA members and other local drinkers, but a sound business decision.”
The pub is converted from three units in Tommyfield Market, with an accompanying ‘outside’ space.
“Oldham has been crying out for such a venue and Michelle has certainly given other pubs something to aim at,” Mr Alexander observed.
“The micropub has attracted many new drinkers to the area and the wide choice of traditional beers and ciders is a great bonus to any visitor.
"As you'd expect, all are served in fantastic condition at very competitive prices.”
He added: “Michelle, as always, hasn't rested on her laurels and along with her husband, Chris, one of the most experienced landlords in our area, has also opened the Fox and Pine.
“This duo are bring great beery things to Oldham and I hope to see even more from them.
"So heartiest congratulations to the Cob and Coal team, who have beaten off stiff competition to win this award."
Michelle said: “We’re over the moon winning the awards, and we’d like to thank our customers for the staunch support.”
The Fox and Pine, situated on the corner of Greaves Street and Firth Street, bears reference to the ironical former name of Oldham Athletic - "Pine Villa".
