British Red Cross emergency response teams on standby across the north as Storm Fleur hits
Date published: 07 August 2021
Thunderstorms and flood warnings are in place for today (Saturday) and Sunday across the whole of the north of England
The British Red Cross's emergency response teams across the north of England are on standby ready to help as the region prepared for the arrival of Storm Fleur.
With thunderstorms and flood warnings in place for today (Saturday) and Sunday across the whole of the north of England, the Red Cross has its teams of emergency response volunteers and staff on standby and has also issued some tips to the public on how to prepare.
Sandra Howitt, interim director of crisis response at the British Red Cross, said: “Our volunteers know that emergency situations can be very stressful and upsetting so we are gearing up to help people deal with whatever might come their way.
“Working as part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, our volunteers across the 192 countries where we work keep people safe and get aid to the right place at the right time including the recent floods in Europe.
"There’s no suggestion Storm Fleur will be as bad, but they are a reminder that extreme weather does have risks and could bring extra anxiety, especially to people whose situation or health may make them feel more vulnerable.
“Experts are predicting Storm Fleur will bring thunderstorms and gusts of up to 60mph in some parts of the UK.
"There are a few things you can do to help prepare.
"Things like making sure your mobile phone is fully charged and that you have torches to hand.
"Having an emergency kit ready to grab can also make a huge difference.
"And checking in on your family, friends and neighbours to make sure they are safe and well."
