Fraudster from Ashton jailed after stealing from elderly victims

A carer who stole tens of thousands of pounds from six elderly people in his care has been jailed.

On Thursday 20 June 2019 at Minshull Street Crown Court, 28-year old Adam Ahmad of Earle Street, Ashton, formerly known as Aftab Usman, was sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to nine counts of fraud by false representation, seven counts of fraud by abuse of position and one count of false imprisonment. 

Ahmad worked as a carer, providing support in the homes of his elderly victims.

Four of those he targeted were suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia, another had a brain injury and another had physical injuries and a failing memory. 

After befriending them, Ahmad stole their bank cards and withdrew thousands of pounds in cash. 

He also used the cards to make payments towards his mortgage, council tax, gym membership and credit card bills, stealing a total of £25,000.

One of those targeted was an 85-year-old man suffering from dementia.

Ahmad barricaded the man into his bedroom overnight in May 2018 by jamming his walking sticks under the door. 

The man – who was left with no access to water or toilet facilities while Ahmad went out spending his money – was eventually able to activate a panic alarm and be rescued.

In police interviews, Ahmad denied all knowledge of the frauds and declined to answer how his council tax had been paid for.

Detective Constable Andrew Burnett of GMP’s Stockport District said: “Ahmad thought nothing of using funds stolen from some of the most vulnerable in society to support his lifestyle.

“Ahmad was paid to care for these people; instead he betrayed their trust in the most heinous way.

“He is a greedy, manipulative individual whose despicable behaviour has left a trail of misery.

“We’re pleased that thanks to the investigative efforts of our officers, this cowardly thief is now behind bars.”

The police have frozen assets belonging to Ahmad. A Proceeds of Crime hearing has been set for 22 November 2019 with the intention to use monies recovered to compensate Ahmad’s victims.
