Third title in four years for Lee

GOLF: LEE Rowbotham claimed his third Werneth club championship in four years as he came out on top in the battle of the scratch golfers.

Lee carded a two-under par 66 to lead by two in the morning round from younger brother Adam and Jack Suttie.

And the club’s past captain held his nerve in the afternoon despite making a bogey five start to shoot 70 in round two for the slenderest of winning margins.

Both reigning champion Adam and Suttie had birdie putts on the last that would have forced a play-off as both scored 68-69, with Jack claiming the runner-up spot on a card play-off.

“That is four years in a row that level-par 136 has taken the club championship - but each one has been with different split-round scores,” said Lee, who has now won the club championship four times.

“I knew Jack and Adam would chase hard, but there were some tricky flag positions and it made making a lot of birdies difficult so I was just pleased to hang in there.”

AFTER playing golf for 20 years, Philip Ramsden has finally won his first event at Stamford.
And he did so in a major, no less, adapting best to the testing conditions to win the Wood Bowl bogey event with a score of +4.

Second was Chris Lees (+3), followed by Gary Ormerod (+2).

A club spokesman said: “If Philip never wins anything again he still has a major in the bag and has become part of history at Stamford Golf Club.

“Philip had a steady game. He is obviously over the moon; what a way to break your duck.”

North Manchester ‘A’ look to make up for their cup final defeat when they take on Stamford in the Oldham and District Golf League’s ‘A’ league play-off final at Dukinfield on Sunday (2.30pm).
All member clubs should be represented at the meeting at Ashton on Monday (September 2) at 8pm.
