GOLF - MEET THE CAPTAINS, Stamford:

AFTER winning 12 majors at your course and being vice-captain for the year, the last thing you need is to be told you can’t swing a golf club.

But that’s exactly what happened to Keith Coxon at Stamford last year.

He said: “I had a couple of operations last year, including one on my shoulder, and was unable to play which was really frustrating.

“Apart from being vice-captain I was greens chairman so much of my time was spent up at the club talking to the greensman and walking the course to clear up litter left by the members!”

Back to full working order and up to a handicap of nine following a career-low of four, Keith is looking forward to helping the club boost its membership.

“We have about 230 full members and 120 five-day members, plus 20-odd juniors and ladies, but there is room for others and we have an open day on May 27 in a bid to attract more,” said Keith.

“In that respect we have the same problems as all the other local clubs, but we have to get on with it.

“And considering the weather we have had, the course is in good condition, although the grass growth could be better.”

Keith (61), who was in the police force for 33 years before retiring in 2005, has been a Stamford member since 1976. He is married to Joanne and has a son, Gary.

Keith’s chosen charity in 2012 will be the Willow Wood Hospice in Ashton.
