A DIRECTOR of Oldham’s oldest independent family business has died following a short illness.

Bachelor Peter Law (77), who lived in Grasscroft, joined Manns Furnishers in the 1950s after completing his National Service.

He followed in his father Percy’s footsteps at the business which was established in 1875 and has a furniture shop in Yorkshire Street and a bed shop in Union Street.

He was well-known and well-respected by staff and locals in Saddleworth where he used to socialise.

Mr Law’s brother and nephew, Raymond and Alan Ogden, are also directors and Alan said: “His total interest was the company and he was very easy to work with. The staff over the period have been with us years, rather than fleeting — he was well thought of.

“He was a smart, intelligent person and an Oldham rugby league fan. He used to go and see them every week at Watersheddings but he never went when they moved.”

Mr Law died on Monday and also leaves his sister, Elizabeth Pellowe, and nephews John Ogden and Gage Pellowe.

The funeral will be held at 1pm on Tuesday at Oldham Crematorium.
