Father’s defiant denial of child sex charge

A FATHER of two alleged to have sexually assaulted a 10-year-old girl, told a trial jury that he was entirely innocent.

Former taxi driver Derek Dissington told Manchester Crown Court: “I would never do that to anybody.”

The 57 year old, nicknamed Grandad Grump by his four grandchildren, has pleaded not guilty to four counts of sexual assault on a girl under 13. The offences are said to have been committed within a short period of time almost two years ago.

The jury has been told that Dissington, of Goodwood Road, Oldham, had first touched the girl’s bottom, asking if it was ok. When she replied yes, he did it again, going on to touch other intimate parts of her body.

Rachel Widdicombe, prosecuting, challenged him: “That was your green light to go ahead wasn’t it? You were alone with her and took your opportunity.”

Dissington gave an emphatic “no” in response, adding “It never happened!”

The court had been told the girl had felt scared by what happened to her and had at first been afraid to tell anyone. She later confessed to her mother.

Asked in court if he had ever touched or sexually assaulted her he replied “Never.”

Asked if he had ever touched her in a way that she might have got the wrong idea about he replied “No.”

It was then put to him that the girl had nothing to gain by telling lies. He answered: “No she hasn’t.”
