DEDICATED Ian McAlpine is celebrating half a century of service to scouting in Oldham.
Ian, of Shaw, joined 86th Manchester Wolf Cubs, at Holy Trinity, Failsworth, in 1950 and continued with them from scouts to rovers.
He started working as a leader in 1963 and continued in this role until 1979 when the travel to Failsworth while working in Swinton and having two children became unsustainable.
Soon after, Ian was approached to help with the 3rd Shaw Scouts from St Mary’s, High Crompton, and he began the association which continues to this day.
Ian said: “I’m really pleased to have worked with the scouts for such a long time and it’s something I’m particularly proud of.
Ian has been a training adviser for the scout district and also the local manager organising the training of leaders and in 2006 he was the district commissioner, chairing the team that organised the centenary celebration of scouting in Oldham.
