Man and woman arrested after baby is found dead at Chadderton property

A man and a woman were arrested and taken into custody yesterday (Sunday) after a baby died at a property in Chadderton.

It's been reported that police officers were called at around 12:56pm to a report concerning the welfare of a baby on Nelson Way.

The baby girl, understood to have been five weeks old, was tragically pronounced dead despite the efforts of paramedics at the scene.

It is also understood that a post-mortem examination is due to take place later this week.

A man, aged 41, and woman, aged 21, have both been arrested on suspicion of child neglect and taken into custody, according to reports.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "Officers were called at around 12.56pm today (09/02/2025) to Nelson Way, Chadderton to a report concerning the welfare of a baby.

"Emergency services attended and despite the best efforts of paramedics, she sadly died.

"A man (aged 41) and a woman (aged 21) have been arrested on suspicion of child neglect.

"Enquiries are ongoing."

In a subsequent statement issued this afternoon (Monday), GMP confirmed an investigation into the death was ongoing and that they were 'keeping an open mind' as they 'carry out several lines of enquiry.'

A spokesperson for the force said: “The death of a baby is devastating, and understandably, news of police investigating this tragedy will send shockwaves through the community.

"We are aware speculation is forming and ask people to refrain from engaging in such discussions.

“Please be assured, we are keeping an open mind as we carry out several lines of enquiry, working closely with Oldham Council and the Local Authority, seeking to understand the full circumstances involved, and how this death has occurred.

“We are awaiting a post-mortem examination and are doing everything we can to get answers for this baby and her loved ones.

"Anyone with information which may assist our investigation is asked to contact police on 101 or via the GMP website quoting log 1342 of 9 February.”
