Pupils from Beever Primary School are joined by Higginshaw residents on the litter pick and bulb planting day
LITTLE litter pickers from Beever Primary School led the way in brightening up a part of Higginshaw.
Youngsters took part in a community litter pick and bulb-planting sesion which was attended by members of Higginshaw Village Residents’ Association and Guinness Northern Counties.
Teams of volunteers helped clear up an area around St Stephen’s Church, Higginshaw, and Thames Street.
After that it was time to plant spring-flowering bulbs along the street that will emerge next year to create a carpet of colour, and planted bulbs, lavenders and rosemary outside the church entrance to create a sensory garden area.
David Wilkinson, association chairman, said: “This project is a positive move towards delivering a cleaner and greener environment for the residents of Higginshaw Village.”
Greg Oates, head teacher, said: “We totally support the aim of making the locality of our homes and school a cleaner and brighter place to live and work.”
Rebekah Beresford, event organiser from Groundwork, said: “The snow prevented us from planting at the beginning of the year but I’m really happy that the event is now going ahead.
“I can’t wait to see the mixture of flowers in bloom next year.”
