A NEW social club for deaf people got off to a great start when an open day attracted around 80 people.
Anjum Raza, chairman of Oldham Deaf Diverse Community, said: “It was an amazing day. Around 60 people were deaf, and the rest were people who are learning sign language or interested in what we were doing.”
Anjum worked with his wife, Bharti Raza, who is profoundly deaf, and Waheed Chowhan for two years to get the group under way.
It is primarily run by deaf people and has won funding from Oldham Council and the Integrated Youth Service to plan 12 months of activities on a monthly basis.
“We have already held our first activity, which was a dance class.
“It was something different, and the people who took part absolutely loved it,” said Anjum.
Anyone who wants more information about the club should contact Waheed on 07826-507827.
