AN iconic Failsworth building could be brought back to life.

Oldham Council has welcomed plans by Oldham Property Partnership for the regeneration of Failsworth Town Hall.

As part of the scheme, it would be used as the new home for Failsworth Library, a lifelong learning centre and other possible community uses.

The rear of the building would be expanded with a large glass extension looking over Rochdale Canal.

Plans are at an early stage but it is hoped the building would also house a community hall as well as a creche/nursery. There is also the possibility of other council partners, such as the police and NHS Oldham, being included in the final plan if a need is identified.

Failsworth Town Hall, next to the former Carnegie library in Oldham Road, was built in 1880 at a cost of £2,600 and housed a range of council services during its time in use. It shut its doors two years ago after the council’s Social Services department, the last remaining tenants, moved out.

Oldham Council leader councillor Howard Sykes said: “Overall, this is a very positive proposal that, if approved, will breathe new life into this iconic local building.

“It is also good news for local people who I am sure will be delighted not only about opening up Failsworth Town Hall again but also the convenience of getting access to a wide range of council services all under one roof. This is not just a straight swop either as the planning submission also contains proposals for work to improve and expand the building with a large glazed extension at the rear providing views over the improved Rochdale Canal.”
