Micky Travis is a European Jiu-Jitsu champion
Oldham has a new European champion.
Micky Travis, who trains at the Stealth Gym in Chadderton under head coach Steve Campbell, triumphed at the prestigious IBJJF European No-Gi Championships in Rome last weekend.
Tough guy Micky, who is 42 and works at Tanner Brothers in Greenfield, won the over-30s title in the super-heavyweight division after winning all four of his bouts on the way to glory.
Not content with that, Micky then took the opportunity to fight in the open category - against fighters much younger than him - and he added a bronze medal after being beaten in the semi-finals.
On his gold medal success, proud Micky said: "It's brillliant, but the weekend went so fast.
"You don't seem to realise everything what's going on at the time, but this was such a big deal for me personally so I'm over the moon."
Micky took up Jiu-Jitsu four years ago after earlier success in karate competitions.
This year he has already won a British title, the North West Open competition, the Lancashire Open, the Manchester Open and the Empire North West Open.
Micky had lived in Oldham all his life until recently moving to Ashton with his wife and two children.
