Police day of traffic and knife-arch work in Derker sees arrests, seizures and fines

Date published: 08 April 2025

Greater Manchester Police officers from the Operation Vulcan team secured two arrests and dozens of fines and traffic offence reports during their latest proactive outing in Derker on Tuesday (April 8).

The team began their day with a drugs warrant.

Following the raid and subsequent finds, officers hit the streets and transport routes as part of their initiative to clear the Derker area of all forms of criminality and maintain public safety.

This included a traffic operation at the Ripponden Road junction with Clyde Road, which saw an arrest on suspicion of failing to appear at court, two vehicles seized for having no insurance, and reports and fines handed out for mobile phone and seatbelt offences.

In addition, further traffic offence reports were distributed for tint and number plate offences.

Officers then completed further work around the Metrolink transport routes, providing a highly visible presence at Derker’s tram stop, with a knife arch in place to deter and protect.

This resulted in one arrest, nine stop-searches, and more than 40 fines issued for not paying the appropriate tram fare.

The problem-solving work by Operation Vulcan has seen the team comprehensively tackle crime from all angles – reducing offending, punishing them, and ensuring the root causes of issues are tackled.

From door-smashing drug warrants to tackling nuisance and illegal drivers, this work will continue for the coming weeks and months.

Sergeant Joseph Dunne, from the Operation Vulcan team, said: “This latest work shows just how many ways we are approaching tackling crime in the Derker area.

"It’s not just putting doors through and making arrests; it’s engaging with the community, working with partners, and tackling criminality in all its forms, from top to bottom.

“Yesterday’s work encapsulated just that.

"We spoke to commuters about our work and the policing we are providing, got dangerous drivers off the road, and recovered suspected illegal products during an early-morning raid.

“I would urge anyone in the Derker area and who has any issues to please come forward and talk to us.

"We are determined to help you in any was possible.”
