Ofsted praised Waterhead Academy's welcoming and inclusive culture and highlighted the strong personal development programme for students
Waterhead Academy in Oldham has taken a major step forward as Ofsted inspectors have recognised the school's ‘considerable improvement’ in key areas.
Following their latest inspection on January 14 and 15, 2025, Ofsted praised the academy's welcoming and inclusive culture and highlighted the strong personal development programme for students.
Personal development at the school is now rated as ‘Good’, a significant achievement that reflects Waterhead Academy’s commitment to ensuring students receive a strong academic education and the skills and experiences needed to thrive beyond the classroom.
The inspection report describes Waterhead Academy as a ‘very welcoming school community’, where pupils from diverse backgrounds mix well and feel safe.
Inspectors noted that students benefit from a broad range of extra-curricular opportunities, particularly in sports and performing arts, and that many relish the chance to develop their leadership skills.
James Wilson, principal at Waterhead Academy, said: “This is an important milestone for Waterhead Academy and recognition of the hard work of staff, students and families.
"Ofsted’s praise of our personal development programme and positive school culture reflects the significant progress the school is making.
"While we still have work to do, this report confirms that we are heading in the right direction.
“The inspectors have confirmed that Waterhead Academy no longer requires special measures, and while we should all take pride in this achievement, we remain ambitious and committed to making Waterhead Academy a school that delivers the very best for every student.”
The report also acknowledges improvements in school behaviour, with pupils responding positively to raised expectations.
Inspectors found that students now experience a calmer learning environment and appreciate how staff apply behaviour policies fairly and consistently.
Attendance has also improved significantly, with leaders implementing effective strategies to support students and families.
The school recognises that its journey is not yet complete.
While the quality of education has improved, Ofsted noted that behaviour and attitudes still require improvement from a minority of students.
It also noted that attendance for some disadvantaged students and those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) remains a challenge.
Waterhead Academy works closely with South Pennine Academies Trust and E-ACT Multi Academy Trust to ensure continued improvement.
A transition between Trusts is underway, bringing additional expertise and support to Waterhead and ensuring the school sustains and builds on its progress.
Mr Wilson added: “Our staff are committed to ensuring all students benefit from a school with a positive and welcoming culture that supports all children to do their best.
"We are incredibly proud that inspectors have recognised the improvements made, and we will continue working tirelessly to build on this progress.”
