Today (Wednesday) is the day Latics co-owner and chairman, Frank Rothwell, sets off on his epic solo race across the Atlantic in the World’s Toughest Row for Alzheimer’s Research UK.
This incredible latest challenge will take 73-year-old Frank 3,000-miles across the world’s second largest ocean, from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua, and will be the second time that he has taken on this race for the charity.
Because if nothing changes, one in two of us will be directly affected by dementia – either by developing the condition ourselves, caring for someone with it, or both.
Frank wants to stop dementia from robbing us of everything that matters - our memories, our connections, our story.
Alzheimer’s Research UK exists for a cure, and they won’t stop until everyone is free from the heartbreak of dementia.
Iceland Foods Charitable Foundation are generously match-funding the first £100,000 of donations made to Frank's fundraising page.
All donations made to this page will go to Alzheimer’s Research UK.
A message from Frank read: "I’m not frightened of anything, except getting dementia.
"Thank you very much for your donation.
"It really means the world to me and to Alzheimer’s Research UK."
He added: "I’m excited and looking forward to setting off in my boat, For A Cure.
“Thank you to everyone who has sent me messages of support and donated so far.
"I can’t believe how much money has already been raised – and I haven’t even set off yet!
"I’m also incredibly grateful to Iceland Foods Charitable Foundation for their pledge of match-funding the first £100,000 of donations made to my JustGiving page.
"It means so much to me and Alzheimer’s Research UK and their mission to find a cure for dementia.”
This will be the second time that Frank has taken on this challenge for the charity, having raised over £1.1 million when he previously completed the row in February 2021.
This saw him become the Guinness World Record holder for the ‘Oldest person to row across the Atlantic’.
