Oldham's greatest adventurer completes Scottish Ultra Marathon

Date published: 26 April 2022

Oldham's greatest adventurer and teacher Steve Hill MBE, has completed a gruelling challenge in the Scottish Highlands.

Steve's latest challenge saw him tackle the Scottish BTU Highland Ultra Marathon over the weekend, during which he completed 125 kms across the Knoydart Peninsula, completely self supported, in the West Highlands over three days.

The deputy head at St Joseph’s RC Primary School in Shaw and founder of the Team Hill Charitable Trust, managed to raise more than £5,000 for charity.

Steve told The Oldham Evening Chronicle; "Despite feeling totally exhausted - it feels great to have completed this extremely tough challenge.

"It was a great adventure up in the Highlands of Scotland. It was a really tough race over the mountains, but in one of the most stunning environments, it really was spectacular.

"The ascents up and over the mountains were brutal, it was a case of just getting my head down and grinding the climbs out and then picking up my pace where possible on the descents.

"The toughest day was Stage 2, when there was a lot of climbing. It was extremely hot and I was out on the course for 14 hours which was a long hard day. I was certainly relieved to reach camp that day!"

The money raised will go towards supporting projects in Uganda and help to support local good causes too.

The Scottish Ultra Marathon is the latest in a long line of Steve's achievements in tackling challenges across the globe, which he says he does to inspire his school pupils.

Steve flies out to Uganda on May 28, to take on the Uganda Marathon again for the 5th time and to see the projects Team Hill Charitable Trust have been supporting over the past few years.

Steve said: "I'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has sponsored and supported me during this recent challenge, the support I receive is always greatly appreciated.

"I'm now doing my research and looking for my challenge for the Summer and any suggestions would be greatly received."
