Limeside Methodist Church celebrates 60 years... plus 2!

Date published: 14 March 2022

The friends and congregation at an Oldham church are planning to celebrate sixty years since the opening of the church, two years later than planned.

Limeside Methodist Church on Limeside Road opened in April 1960, but plans to commemorate the opening were put on hold during the Covid pandemic.

Now, two years later, church members are looking for people who have attended the church in the past, or celebrated a christening or marriage.

Congregation member Jenni Hare says the church has been an important part of her life.

"I've been attending the church since I was old enough to attend the Sunday School and my parents were married at Limeside in September 1990 by the Rev David Archer

"Now I help run our successful youth club, along with a team of volunteers."

A brick laying ceremony in October 1958 began the work on the church.  People were invited to lay a brick as part of what was going to be their new Limeside Methodist Church

The first service took place on Sunday 24th April 1960 at 10:45am with the church's first Minister, The Rev Bowyer.

Later that summer, the first wedding took place as John Markham married Megan Wiseman.

Jenni is helping to organise a celebration at the church for the anniversary on Saturday 23rd April.  There will be a display of the church's history as well as afternoon tea.
