Oldham NHS group remember Matthew as they gear up to take on the gruelling Three Peaks Challenge

Date published: 23 June 2021

A dedicated community-based group of NHS staff from Oldham are raising funds for Papyrus – a prevention of young suicide charity - by taking on the National Three Peaks Challenge this weekend.

The National Three Peaks Challenge involves climbing the tallest mountains in Scotland, Wales and England, all within 24 hours.

Group member Michelle Flint has been raising funds for Papyrus for a number of years, in loving memory of her son Matthew.

Papyrus is a UK charity dedicated to the prevention of young suicide.

They provide substantial support to both young people and their families and work with communities in a bid to help remove the stigma around suicide.

They also run HOPELINEUK, which is a confidential helpline staffed by trained professionals providing advice, support and information to anyone who is feeling suicidal, or concerned that a young person they know may be at risk.

This year, Oldham group Sara, Paula, Alyson, Michelle and friends/family have vowed to complete the Three Peaks Challenge within 24 hours – and that’s the equivalent of walking 26 miles, with a total ascent of 10,052ft.

The group have raised £1,246 so far – having set an initial target of £1,000 - and hope to continue raising funds for this vital charity.
