Oyez, Oyez... kindly bearded town crier Marcus Emms is renowned for announcing joyous events across the community.

But he was caught off guard when Oldham’s Mayor, Councillor Ginny Alexander  presented him with a distinguished Mayors Appreciation award on his 50th birthday.

Marcus, who has been Town Crier for Shaw and Crompton for three years, said: "The award came  as a complete surprise to both me and my wife, Michaela,  particularly as it was delivered in time for my birthday and mentioned both my role as Town Crier but Santa-ing role which I have done since 2003."

In her letter to Marcus Mayor Alexander said: "Your hard work does not go unoticed. And I would like to thank you for your continued efforts to cheer the people of Oldham up, not  only is town crier but I know you have also played your part as Santa Claus recently.

"After  meeting you at various events I really did see the kind gentleman that you really are. You have been suffering yourself with illness and not once have you asked for help or complained, you’ve just continued to help others and for this you truly do deserve this award."

Marcus went on: "Before Christmas my wife and pre-recorded 1,607 online videos for children who wouldn't or couldn't get to visit Santa due to the current Covid crises.

"We also read ‘Twas the night before Christmas' by Clement C Moore, to local nursery children before handing out presents.

"We did live videos in support of a national charity Cariad Angel Gowns for still born and neo-natal loss on a donate if you wish to basis. They, as a small charity, have lost all their access to funding.

"We sent this to every organisation we have dealt with over the years, in the hope it reached just one child who would be reassured Santa was still coming.”

He added: “on Fridays  in December we did live Santa streams for Royton and Crompton Rotary club and Inner Wheel, but given we couldn't visit foster families and the  children's hospital it was about reaching as many children as possible."

And he revealed he has been battling serious eye problems but declared: “Still we made children smile - so it was all worthwhile.”
