GCSE results day: Records smashed at Oldham Academy North

Date published: 22 August 2018

The staff and pupils at Oldham Academy North rejoiced at another excellent set of exam results, on a day when a record number of 55 grade 9 GCSE’s were awarded.

Not only is this a fantastic achievement, the academy is also celebrating a 5% increase in the number of students gaining grades 9-5 and a 5% increase with the number of students celebrating three A*- A or equivalent.

The academy has seen over half of its students achieve five 9-4 GCSE results, including English and Maths.

The academy is incredibly proud of all its students, with some outstanding personal performances from Sheikh Khadiza Iqra, achieving six grade 9s, two grade 8s, one grade 7 and one A grade, Shalima Begum achieving five grade 9s, two grade 8s 1 A*, one grade 6 and one A grade.

Farhan Ahmod achieved two grade 9s, four grade 8s, three grade 7s and one A*.

Headteacher Chris Davis said: “This is another year of wonderful results where some are record breaking and it is down to the hard work and determination shown by the class of 2018 and their excellent teachers.

"It has been a challenging year and it is fantastic to end it by witnessing so many students achieve some excellent individual results.

"I am truly excited about the future of the academy, owing to a strong recruitment drive prior to the summer break, forward thinking curriculum refinements, and our multi-million pound extension which will see our student numbers continue to grow.”

This year has seen the second set of changes to GCSE curriculum and assessment.

In addition to the changes in 2017 for English and Maths when they were made more challenging, similar changes in 2018 will affect 20 more subjects, and the remainder from 2019.

These subjects are all graded on a new scale of 9 to 1, with 9 the highest grade, rather than A* to G.

Simple comparison of 2018 GCSE results with previous years’ results is not possible.

These changes also affect the government Basics, Attainment 8, Progress 8 and Ebacc measures.

Progress comparison will be possible later this year when national level data is released.
