HEADING FOR PASTURES NEW: Heyside Cricket Club switches leagues
CRICKET:
HEYSIDE’S switch to the Central Lancashire League ensures the best future for the club says skipper Ryan Barnes.
The Little Hey Street outfit, along with Elton of the Bolton Association, has been invited into the CLL for next season.
Though still to officially accept, reigning champions Heyside appear decided to leave the Saddleworth and District League, ending an association dating back to 1957.
Barnes says a more stable outlook and less cricket — the 18-club CLL has a two-division format — were key pointers in the decision to move.
He said: “It ensures the best future for the club. Once we get into that top division, we’ll be playing good cricket week in, week out and it will be more of a challenge for us.”
Heyside’s ground could look rather different if development plans come to fruition. Ther are plans for new changing rooms and an electronic scorebox. Longer term the club hopes to form an alliance with Heyside Football Club to acquire land surrounding the ground then extending the playing surface and perhaps fitting a grass football pitch and artificial surface.
Heyside are also working towards Clubmark, which is of benefit when it comes to acquiring grants.
Barnes added: “It wasn’t an easy decision to make and we’ll miss playing the likes of Uppermill, but we think it is in the best interests of Heyside CC.
HEYSIDE’S LCB Cup adventure got no further than the first hurdle after they lost by seven wickets at Lowerhouse, from the Lancashire League.
Scott Bloor struck a vital 68 as the visitors, who were 20 for six at one stage, posted 127.
Lowerhouse were three wickets down with only 27 on the board, but suffered no more alarms as they coasted home with 17 overs to spare.
