Are you a runner who’s lost the joy of running?
Do gadgets and apps dominate your runs?
Local author and filmmaker John L Matthews has a solution: Unplugged Runner: What Happens When You Run Free.
Having launched just in time for the 2025 New Year Start when we all start exercising again after too much indulgence, this e-book challenges runners to ditch the tech and rediscover the pure joy of running.
"If you don’t know what to get the runner in your life, here’s the perfect gift," says John.
The book explores his journey of running without gadgets, connecting with nature, and finding freedom.
It’s also the start of a potential movement encouraging others to do the same.
In the foreword, broadcaster Jim White reflects on modern running culture, adding: “Look around at any Park Run and you’ll see people fiddling with gadgets instead of enjoying the moment.
"In this book, John invites you to try running free.
"What happens to him is fascinating!”
Editor Denise Cowle describes the book as “a meditation on John’s reconnection with running, nature, and adventure.”
John’s own experiences highlight how gadgets can interfere with the joy of running.
He added: "Do you need a gadget to tell you you’re enjoying sex? No! So why use one for running?"
Readers can also join the first "Unplugged Runner Club", a community for like-minded runners.
The launch includes a branded clothing line and plans for future events promoting tech-free running.
John said: "Exercise has become a data-driven obsession.
"Unplugged Runner is about bringing back the fun and focusing on the present moment.
"I hope this book inspires a movement that helps people reconnect with the joy of running."
