WERNETH Golf Club has been in mourning this week following the death of former lady captain Jane Fletcher at 48, after a battle against cancer.

Jane, whose family has lived next to the Green Lane course for many years, was elected lady captain in 2002.

A former Lancashire ladies’ player off a handicap of five, Jane went on to represent Werneth at all levels. She won 37 major titles and the best gross competition 18 times. She twice held the ladies’ course record.

Club secretary John Barlow said: “Over the years Jane was a loyal and dedicated member of the club.

“She was a keen competitor and a great ambassador for the club. She will be sadly missed.”

The funeral service is on June 6 (2.30pm) at St Margaret’s Church, Hollinwood, before committal at Oldham Crematorium (3.30pm).

The family has requested that only bright colours be worn - and no black ties.
