Butler in Latics coaching link
LEE Butler has been linked with a move to fill the goalkeeper coach vacancy at Athletic.
The former Barnsley, Wigan and Halifax goalkeeper recently departed a similar role at the Keepmoat Stadium — where he was replaced by outgoing Boundary Park man Paul Gerrard, who has again joined forces with former Athletic manager Paul Dickov.
Sheffield-born Butler (47), is well-regarded and would appear a straightforward fit into the structure at Boundary Park.
As was the case with Gerrard in the aftermath of Dickov’s departure, last season he took on an expanded coaching role following a managerial change.
With Brian Flynn in charge of team affairs following Dean Saunders’ exit, Butler was heavily involved on match days as Doncaster gained promotion to the Championship.
After five years with Rovers he was told at the weekend taht his services were no longer required.
With Gerrard gone, first-team coach Paul Murray and manager Lee Johnson are focusing on Athletic’s senior coaching set-up.
On replacing Butler with Gerrard, Dickov told the BBC: “I know Lee Butler was popular here. It was a hard thing to do when I spoke to him on Saturday morning.
“I have been to clubs in the Premier League and Championship in the last two or three years to watch them train and Paul Gerrard is up there with the best of them.”
Another player who may yet make the switch from Athletic to Doncaster in Jean-Yves Mvoto, with Dickov admitting he he spoken to the centre-back about a free transfer.
“Jean I know well,” he added. “There has been contact, that is no secret, but we will just wait to see what happens.”
