Bill Naylor in his playing days
FORMER Athletic player Bill Naylor, who made over 100 appearances for the club between 1948 and 1959, has died at the age of 86.
A six-foot full-back who also turned out at centre-half later during his career, Bill originally came to Boundary Park from Huddersfield Town for a fee of £600.
Described as a confident player on the field, Bill will be remembered for a remarkable period of service with Athletic — mainly served under manager George Hardwick — which saw him qualify for two benefits.
The first, in 1953, was shared with Eric Gemmill, while the second, in 1959, was alongside Wilf Hobson.
Elder brother of Harold, who also made an appearance for Athletic, Bill had originally signed for Huddersfield shortly after making his debut for the Fleet Air Arm branch of the British Royal Navy. His Athletic debut was against Barrow on April 6, 1948.
Bill leaves his sons Peter and Paul.
A funeral service and committal will take place at Oldham Crematorium on Monday, June 27 at 1.30pm.
