BOXING: OLDHAM’S up-and-coming boxing star Mark Heffron has been backed for the big time after a great start to his professional career.
The 18-year-old welterweight, who has won all four bouts since bringing the curtain down on an impressive amateur run, is set to return to the ring next month.
Heffron’s Denton-based trainer, Joe Gallagher, said: “We are looking to January 20 for his next fight.
“He will be training over the Christmas period in preparation so we are hoping to arrange something soon after then, and pretty soon we will be pushing for a title fight.
“He is currently in the gym working alongside ex-Olympian Joe Murray, John Murray and Matt Macklin, so he is getting good experience and soon you will see his name up alongside the likes of Joe Calzaghe and Ricky Hatton.”
Heffron, younger brother of Frank Warren prospect Ronnie, made his name with a series of amateur accolades.
He enjoyed victories at the National Boys Club Championships, the Great Britain Championships, a multi-nations tournament in Ireland and also helped England claim victory in the Home Inter-nationals.
Heffron also claimed a silver medal at the European Union Championships in Poland.
“Mark was actually the first fighter to box in 3D, when he beat undefeated Chris O’Brien on the undercard of David Haye v Audley Harrison, and he raised a lot of eyebrows ringside with his ability,” said Gallagher.
“The fight raised his profile and the name Mark Heffron is becoming well-known. He is definitely a hot talent.
“He has enjoyed a great start to his pro-career with four fights and four wins, two with knockouts in the second round. Mark has made big inroads.”
With such high hopes and ambitions, there will be little in the way of a break over the festive period for Heffron, as both he and his coach look towards the future.
