Newton in tough time trial

AFTER finish second in the National 25-Mile Time Trial Championship earlier this season, Chadderton cycling ace Chris Newton will be aiming to clock another good time when he tackles a classy field in the British Circuit Time Trial Championship in Buckinghamshire on Sunday.

The 35-year-old Olympic track medallist and World Cup winner was beaten only by Michael Hutchinson in the 25-mile title race back in June, and Hutchinson is the last man off in the 31.2-mile race at Botolph Claydon.

Many are tipping Hutchinson or Tour de France pro Bradley Wiggins for victory in the event, but anything can happen in time trialling, and Newton will be pushing to get as high up the podium steps as he can.

Following his ride this weekend, Newton will turn his attentions to the Tour of Britain stage race, where he is part of a seven-rider Rapha Condor team who will come up against some of the best teams in the world.

THE North West League cyclo-cross season begins on Sunday with the Weaver Valley CC event at Pignut Hill near Green Bank Lane in Northwich.
