Old town hall gets blooming makeover

THIS is how the old town hall has been transformed as the borough gears up to enter the North-West in Bloom competition.

Local artists are plastering the building with colourful hoardings, while eye-catching plants and flowers are planted across the town centre and in the New Deal for Communities area (NDC) in Fitton Hill.

The NDC Board has already bought 200 hanging baskets, which will be displayed around the area, while pupils from Blue Coat School have been busy filling planters in the High Street and in the town centre.

The work with Blue Coat is a pilot, which will eventually support pupils who are looking to a vocational diploma.

The ugly wasteland that is St Mary’s Way will also be prepared as a wildflower meadow and Blue Coat School’s art department will create a sculpture to be placed in the meadow.

Judging will take place on July 31 and Oldham Council is planning to invite the judges to a civic reception where they will meet the Mayor, the chief executive and all the others involved in the Oldham entry.
