SHOPPERS grabbed their trolleys and patiently waited for Royton's brand new Lidl store to open its doors for the first time yesterday.
The mayor of Oldham, Councillor Derek Heffernan, officially opened the new supermarket after cutting the ceremonial ribbon.
He was joined by Royton councillors, store staff and local residents eager to check out the bargains and items on offer.
The 22,000sq ft store, which also includes a 100-space car park, has been built in Royton town centre at land bounded by High Street, Middleton Road and Croft Head and created up to 40 new jobs.
The store was given planning permission by Oldham Council last year following the demolition of the Royton Assembly Hall and former Albion Club.
Nick Harvey, Lidl UK's regional head of property, said: "We would like to thank all those who have played a part in bringing this new Lidl store to Royton.
"It is wonderful for us to be able to create more jobs and investment opportunities in the area, and we can't wait to start serving our multi-award winning products to the local community."
Oldham Council leader Councillor Jean Stretton said: "It's great to see such a popular and trusted brand as Lidl open its doors in Royton.
"The district centre is undergoing a major upgrade as part of our long-term regeneration plans and the store will breathe new life into the town."
